Porsche Experience Workshop

Learn. Experience. Understand.

A wide range of MINT activities at the Porsche Experience Workshop. The Porsche Experience Workshop at the "VDI-GaraGe" Technology Centre in Leipzig's Plagwitz district offers exciting courses on the topics of automobile production, mobility of the future and drive concepts. For example, the focus is on what production may look like in the future, how to design mobility sustainably or what automotive engineering and digitalisation have to do with each other. The participants learn how a Porsche is made and what is behind combustion and electric drives. The children and young people will be guided by Porsche Leipzig instructors. In cooperation with the VDI-GaraGe, school classes and after-school groups in grades three to nine as well as children and young people aged eight to 15 can attend the nine courses of the adventure workshop. The educational programme in the modern adventure world deals with current topics from the curriculum and practice. From Smart Factory to sustainability to metal workshop: With exciting challenges and interesting insights into the world of science, young people are inspired for technical topics in a playful and practical way. As a team, children and young people can immerse themselves in various projects and deepen their knowledge. All information on offers and course booking can be found at www.g-a-r-a-g-e.com/porsche-erlebniswerkstatt

With the Erlebniswerkstatt, Porsche is further expanding its commitment to education and youth development. The sports car manufacturer is a sponsor of the Saxon state competition "Schüler experimentieren" (Pupils Experiment) and offers insights into the biodiversity of the off-road site at the Leipzig location with the environmental education project "Porsche Safari".

Philip Heumann - automotive mechatronics technician

My name is Philip Heumann and I'm currently in the first year of my apprenticeship as an automotive mechatronics technician. Becoming an automotive mechatronics technician was something that I decided on at a very early stage, because it's an occupation which combines several of my interests. DIY is one of my hobbies, I'm fascinated by cars and very interested in technology, which means that an apprenticeship in the automotive industry is ideal for me.

During a number of work experience courses I acquired initial know-how about working on cars, and this confirmed my ambitions to become an automotive mechatronics technician. I quickly found that an apprenticeship with Porsche was exactly what I was looking for – the work is really interesting, varied and demanding. The other apprentices in my year come from all parts of the country: they all have different characters and different interests, so we form a highly dynamic group. I feel very much at home in my team and I have lots of possibilities to realise my potential to make a personal contribution.

The areas I have covered so far during my apprenticeship include the basics of metalworking, together with welding, and engine training in which I was able to examine a large number of Porsche engines down to the last detail. In learning the basics of automotive electrical systems, I was able to extend my knowledge of maths and physics directly on the various components of the automobile.

Learning directly on the vehicle enables us to understand the complex integration and interrelations between components and systems. As a result you get a technical overview with in-depth knowledge of our sports cars.

From the rest of my apprenticeship I expect to reinforce what I have already learnt and to acquire additional specific know-how. I'm really looking forward to operations in different departments and upcoming projects.

After I complete my training a lot of opportunities will be open to me offering exciting areas of operations. I look forward to completing the apprenticeship successfully and finding an interesting area of work at our plant.

Michelle Kappe - mechatronics technician

My name is Michelle Kappe and I'm in the first year of my apprenticeship as a mechatronics technician.

When I was at school physics was one of my favourite subjects, and in my spare time I always enjoyed tinkering with engines and technical equipment. When I then looked into the kind of occupations which cover this kind of activity the occupation of mechatronics technician made an especially positive impression on me. The reason for this is that it consists of two main areas: electrical technology and metal processing. For me a further important aspect was the fact that mechatronics technicians can work in a number of occupational areas and operational fields, and the demand for specialist technicians is therefore correspondingly high.

In the very first week of our apprenticeship all of the new apprentices went on a trip to get to know one another. My colleagues and I had the opportunity in a number of team exercises to become acquainted and our instructors were also able to gain an initial impression of us. From the very beginning we were welcomed to the large team of apprentices at Porsche. The more experienced apprentices, as well as our instructors, are always ready to help us in word and deed if we have any questions or problems.

In the first half year of my occupational training we were introduced to the basics of metalworking (e.g. conventional milling, turning, sawing and drilling), pneumatics and electronics. In the field of electrical technology we learned how to fit small electrical control boxes with relays and wiring.

I expect from the remaining part of my apprenticeship that I will learn a great deal more about electrical technology and electrical equipment, so that I can pass the exams in the second year of my apprenticeship, and will then be able to carry out initial operations as a mechatronics technician in the body shop and in the paint shop.

After I pass my final exams I hope to be offered a job by Porsche and work here in maintenance operations. Perhaps I will then also be able to take advantage of other training opportunities in order to acquire further qualifications.

The Porsche apprenticeship workshop

The apprenticeship workshop is located at the centre of the assembly facility for the Panamera and is accordingly integrated into normal production operations. Apprentices have the opportunity to experience from the very first day on what happens inside the works, and the kind of workstations they are being trained to occupy. The apprenticeship workshop consists of the actual workshop of 600 m², a classroom with the latest equipment and a service area. The workshop has cutting-edge technical equipment which enables professional operations. For example, apprentices have access to a welding section, workbenches, four hydraulic ramps and other technical installations. Both everyday tasks such as oil changes, changing fan belts and axial alignment are carried out here, as well as the implementation of varied and interesting projects. The latest successes achieved by the Porsche apprenticeship programme are awards received from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry as the "Best company apprenticeship programme in Saxony" and the selection of one of the company's apprentices as the "Best young skilled worker in Leipzig in the field of automotive mechatronics".
